RATINGS

93-95The Wine Advocate

...seductively out of the glass with expressive plum preserves, blueberry tart and Black Forest cake notes plus hints of licorice, espresso and camphor. Full-bodied, rich and seductive, it has a solid backbone of ripe, fine-grained tannins and loads of freshness, finishing long and mineral laced.

93Vinous / IWC

...soaring aromatic presence, the 2018 is impeccable right out of the gate. Dark cherry/plum fruit, mocha, spice and new leather blossom over time. Pliant and supple, with soft curves, this finely-crafted, vibrant Saint-Émilion checks all the boxes. Terrific.

93James Suckling

Currants, licorice and blackberries with some flowers and stewed blueberries on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with a tight, intense palate and a chewy finish. Yet, the tannins remain fine and polished.

92Jeb Dunnuck

Based on 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Château Haut-Sarpe has a solid, medium to full-bodied, nicely textured and concentrated style that shows the rich, sunny style of the vintage yet still has notable freshness. Lots of red and black cherry fruits, notes of leafy herbs, chocolate, damp earth, and flowers, a great mid-palate, and ripe tannins all make for an outstanding Saint-Emilion that will benefit from 2-4 years in the cellar and drink well over the following decade.

90Decanter Magazine (points)

Concentrated cassis, fig, black pepper and olive notes through the palate...tannins accentuated by full extraction and a touch of bitterness on the end.

REGION

France, Bordeaux, St.-Émilion

Saint-Émilion is on the east side of the Dordogne River. At 13,400 acres it is one of Bordeaux’s largest appellations, and perhaps its most picturesque. It is also home to what has been called “the garagiste” movement of upstart, tradition-defying winemakers who produce artisanal wines in styles that are unconventional for the appellation. The village of Saint-Émilion dates from the middle ages and it sits on low hills, surrounded by ancient walls. Like its neighbor Pomerol, Saint-Émilion was not included in the famous Bordeaux classification system of 1855. But a century later a ranking system was put in place, and unlike the classification system for the Medoc, the Saint-Émilion system is reviewed every ten years, meaning that estates can be upgraded or downgraded. There are three rankings: Grand Cru Classé, Premier Grand Cru Classé B and Premier Grand Cru Classé A, with the final ranking being the best. Such legendary Saint-Émilion estates as Châteaux Ausone and Cheval-Blanc are Premier Grand Cru Classé A, along with Châteaux Pavie and Angélus, both added to the classification in 2012. Wines in this appellation are primarily Merlot, mixed with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
